About Adam Simning, MD, PhD
I am a board-certified geriatric psychiatrist and the founder of Vitality in Aging Psychiatry, PLLC, a private outpatient psychiatry practice serving older adults in the Rochester and Pittsford, New York area.
My clinical focus is the mental health of adults age 60 and older. I specialize in the diagnosis and treatment of late-life depression, anxiety, grief, and cognitive and memory concerns. I am particularly interested in the complex relationship between emotional wellbeing, brain health, and medical illness — an area that often requires thoughtful, specialized care.
Over the course of my career, I have worked extensively with older adults navigating life transitions, medical complexity, and changes in independence. I believe psychiatric care in later life should be collaborative, respectful, and deeply individualized. I take time to understand each person’s goals, values, and lived experience, and I approach treatment with both clinical rigor and compassion.
My approach includes comprehensive diagnostic evaluation, careful and conservative medication management, and psychotherapeutic support tailored to the needs of aging adults. I also recognize the essential role of families and caregivers and provide education and guidance when helpful.
Before transitioning to private practice in 2023, I spent over a decade conducting public health research on issues related to healthy aging and aging in place, with more than 50 peer-reviewed journal articles as well as federally funded research projects.
Care for Physicians and Healthcare Professionals
In addition to my work in geriatric psychiatry, I provide confidential psychiatric care for physicians and healthcare professionals.
Medicine carries unique emotional and professional demands. Many clinicians experience periods of burnout, anxiety, depression, insomnia, or career uncertainty — often while continuing to care for others. I understand the culture of medicine and the pressures that accompany it, and I offer discreet, thoughtful care designed to support clarity, resilience, and wellbeing.
Whether navigating emotional exhaustion, professional transition, or personal stress, physicians deserve the same level of attentive, expert care that they provide to their patients.
My Philosophy of Care
I believe psychiatric treatment should feel both safe and substantive. My work is grounded in evidence-based practice, but equally in the belief that being heard and understood is foundational to healing.
Appointments are unhurried and collaborative. My goal is to provide a calm, private space where older adults, family members, and healthcare professionals feel respected and supported.
I offer in-person visits in a soothing office setting in Pittsford, NY, as well as secure telehealth appointments for patients throughout the region.
